DBT-PE for Trauma

Evidence-based Program

What is DBT-PE for Trauma?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Prolonged Exposure (DBT PE) is a groundbreaking approach that has shown promising results for individuals with BPD, particularly in addressing unresolved trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.

DBT PE is a unique integration of two evidence-based therapies: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE). DBT is a comprehensive treatment approach, initially developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, that emphasizes the development of emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness skills. On the other hand, PE is a trauma-focused therapy designed by Dr. Edna Foa to help individuals confront and process unresolved traumatic memories in a safe and controlled environment.

By combining the strengths of DBT and PE, DBT PE aims to empower individuals with BPD to gain mastery over their emotional and behavioural responses while addressing the root causes of their distress, often stemming from unresolved trauma. This integrative approach provides a comprehensive and effective treatment option for those dealing with both BPD and PTSD symptoms.

Reduced PTSD Symptoms

Unresolved trauma is common among individuals with BPD and can exacerbate their symptoms. PE addresses trauma-related symptoms, such as flashbacks, nightmares, and avoidance behaviours. By incorporating PE into the DBT framework, clients can process their traumatic experiences in a safe and controlled manner, significantly reducing PTSD symptoms.

Distress Tolerance

DBT PE helps clients build distress tolerance, enabling them to withstand and manage painful emotions without resorting to harmful coping strategies. This essential skill allows individuals with BPD to better handle crisis situations and avoid impulsive behaviors that could damage their relationships or personal well-being.

Emotional Regulation

One of the core challenges for individuals with BPD is managing intense emotions, which can often lead to impulsive and self-destructive behaviors. DBT PE teaches clients to recognize, understand, and regulate their emotional responses effectively. By developing emotional regulation skills, individuals with BPD are better equipped to cope with distressing situations and navigate their relationships successfully.

Interpersonal Effectiveness

Relationships can be particularly challenging for individuals with BPD due to their intense emotional reactions and fear of abandonment. DBT PE equips clients with practical tools and strategies to improve their communication, assertiveness, and empathy skills. As a result, individuals with BPD can develop healthier and more fulfilling relationships with others.

Reduced Reliance on Maladaptive Coping Strategies

Individuals with BPD often rely on maladaptive coping mechanisms, such as self-harm or substance abuse, to manage their emotional pain. DBT PE equips clients with healthier coping strategies and promotes the development of more adaptive responses to distress. As clients become more skilled at managing their emotions and confronting their trauma, they are less likely to engage in harmful behaviours, improving overall well-being.

DBT PE is a flexible and comprehensive treatment approach that can be tailored to each client’s unique needs. Therapists work closely with individuals to identify their specific goals, strengths, and areas of improvement, ensuring that the therapy is personalized and effective. This customization allows for a more targeted and efficient treatment process, ultimately improving outcomes.

Research has shown that the benefits of DBT PE can be long-lasting, with many individuals experiencing significant improvements in their BPD and PTSD symptoms even after the completion of therapy. By equipping clients with the tools and strategies needed to navigate their emotions and relationships effectively, DBT PE promotes lasting change and growth, allowing individuals with BPD to lead more fulfilling and healthy lives.
